Quad Watch Winder

Four slots is the point where a watch winder stops being an accessory and starts being a piece of furniture. A quad watch winder suits a collector with a genuine rotation: several automatics worn regularly enough to justify keeping them all running, rather than one or two that matter and a drawer full that do not.

Construction is the thing to scrutinise at this capacity. Better quad winders are built as two paired modules in a shared case, which means a single motor failure takes out two positions rather than the whole unit, and on some designs the module can be replaced. Cheaper quads run four positions from a shared drive, where one failure ends the winder. Ask what happens when a motor dies, because at four slots it eventually will.

Noise compounds here in a way it does not at one or two slots. Four motors cycling on independent schedules means something is nearly always turning, so the quiet gaps that make a double tolerable in a bedroom largely disappear. A quad belongs in a study, a dressing room or a safe rather than beside a bed, and buying one on the strength of a published decibel figure is a mistake. Owner reports are the better guide.

Heat is the other consideration people miss. Four motors in an enclosed case with a glass door raise the internal temperature above ambient, and heat is harder on a mechanical watch than almost anything else. Keep a quad somewhere cool, out of direct sun, and give it air. Our watch winder maintenance guide covers placement in more detail.

The four-slot reviews below note module construction and per-position control for each unit.
